Academic Engagement Plan (AEP) Manager

Location: Blyth or Glasgow


The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is one of a number of Catapults set up by Innovate UK to accelerate the deployment of innovative technology in the UK.

With primary locations in Glasgow and Blyth, and regionally facilities in Hull, Levenmouth, Wales and Cornwall.  ORE Catapult is working with industry and academia to identify, develop, prove and de-risk promising new technologies and bring them to market. It is helping to reduce the cost of offshore renewable energy, supporting the growth of the industry and creating UK benefit.


What is the role?

Research & Disruptive Innovation are currently looking for an Academic Engagement Plan (AEP) Manager to join their team. This role will manage and develop the AEP and will include the management of existing research hubs (RHs) and strategic academic engagements, involvement in the development of new ones and the management of miscellaneous academic engagements such as PhDs and EngDs. This role will report directly into the Head of Strategic Research.


What are my key responsibilities?

  • Manage the delivery of existing RHs and strategic research programmes working alongside the universities’ corresponding project manager

  • Monitor and report on research programme progress including assessment against the agreed KPIs

  • Assist with the development of public funding proposals originating within the RHs and strategic research programmes to leverage additional public and private funding

  • Look for opportunities to build the existing RHs and strategic programmes via third party participation and leveraging external funding

  • Generate and develop innovative ideas for consideration within the existing RH and strategic research programmes

  • Manage internal/external enquiries relating to the AEP under the supervision of the Head of Strategic Research

  • Support development strategies for new RHs and strategic programmes to meet business needs and create business opportunities

  • Maintain regular communications with the academic community to maximise relevant academic engagement

  • Manage miscellaneous formal academic engagement outside of the RHs and strategic programmes, e.g. PhD/EngD contracts, etc…

  • Identify and manage intellectual property originating from the research activity of the AE

  • Be committed to ensuring and maintaining a high standard of health & safety awareness through encouraging safe behaviors

  • Complete ad-hoc duties relevant to the role under the direction of the Line Manager or appointed deputy

  • Undertake any other duties of which the responsibility, experience and skills required fall within the post holder’s capability


What do I need to qualify for this role?

  • A degree (or equivalent) in an engineering/scientific discipline

  • R&D experience including R&D project/programme management and business development related to R&D

  • A research background, preferably in offshore renewables

  • Track record of supporting funding bid development at national and/or international levels

  • Project planning experience, preferably with Microsoft Project and/or PRINCE2 user experience

  • Ability to ensure internally agreed standards and work practices are developed and maintained

  • Good interpersonal, communication and time management skills

  • Innovative and creative thinking

  • Tenacity, persistence and determination to succeed in overcoming obstacles

  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and within a highly pressured environment


The following are desirable, but not essential

  • Experience in delivering national and/or international R&D projects

  • Experience of working in a relevant industry sector, preferably wind/marine or power/drive train sectors

  • Experience of developing collaboration agreements

  • Key technical and commercial background experience relating to product development including intellectual asset management

  • Management of intellectual property contained within research programmes
