Calibration Engineer

(6-month Fixed Term Contract)

The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is one of a number of Catapults set up by Innovate UK to accelerate the deployment of innovative technology in the UK.

With primary locations in Glasgow and Blyth, Northumberland, ORE Catapult is the UK’s leading technology innovation and research centre for offshore renewable energy.  We are delivering the UK’s largest clean growth opportunity by accelerating the creation and growth of UK companies in offshore renewable energy. Our unique facilities, research and engineering capabilities bring together industry and academia and drive innovation, focusing on three main areas: testing and validating offshore renewable energy technologies; research & innovation; improving the operational performance of the existing fleet of offshore renewable energy infrastructure.

What is the role?

We are now recruiting for an interim Calibration Engineer to join our Testing & Validation directorate. The aim of this position is to establish a holistic Calibration Management System.

The calibration management system will support the development ORE Catapult’s service offering whilst ensuring that our commercial test programmes are underpinned by robust and sustainable engineering processes, commensurate with the organisations discerning quality and safety standards.

This is an interim project which will afford the successful candidate the autonomy to support our national organisation in improving the quality and efficiency of its operational performance.

What are the key responsibilities?

  • Collaborate with Test & Validation Management Team to deliver a calibration management system action plan which builds upon our current processes and procedures;
  • Establish a Calibration Management System which can provide the functionalities of tracking calibrated items in an auditable fashion;
  • We expect the system solution to be paired with a user-friendly dashboard, linked to a comprehensive data set,  recording drift, repeatability and performance analysis for mechanical, environmental and electrical test equipment.
  • Create and develop simple to understand metrics which cater to all users of the calibrated instruments
  • Develop uncertainty budgets and traceability trees to support test performance and accreditation requirements;
  • Ensuring that mandatory and legislative QH&S/HS&E aspects of work are implemented at all times
  • Supporting process improvement and functional development
  • Providing on the job training and mentoring at all levels as and when required
  • undertaking dimensional calibration inspections, measurements properly to the correct procedures, instructions and specifications.
  • You will also maintain relevant records of work, data and results in a traceable and auditable manner employing user-friendly solutions which cater to all users

Desired qualities and experience;

  • Highly numeric, solution oriented
  • Exceptionally accurate
  • Experience working strategically with stakeholders across a business to define and implement a major change to centrally managed, multi-disciplinary calibration management system
  • Experience collaborating with technical departments creating solutions for a shared goal
  • Self-motivated and solution oriented
  • Previous experience of supporting and / or promoting Health & Safety, Environment & Quality as core business principles within an ISO 45001, ISO14001, ISO9001, ISO17025 environment

What do I need to qualify for this role?

  • Educated to at least degree level in a relevant discipline
  • Knowledge and experience of applying good practice engineering design, procedures and tools
  • Excellent mathematical / analytical skills
  • Experience of calibration and certification requirements and processes
  • Demonstrable engineering experience in testing and numerical processing
  • Excellent IT Skills; knowledge of numerical data processing packages such as Excel, Diadem, R, SQL or MATLAB
