The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is one of a number of Catapults set up by Innovate UK to accelerate the deployment of innovative technology in the UK.

With primary locations in Glasgow and Blyth, and regionally facilities in Hull, Levenmouth, Wales and Cornwall.  ORE Catapult is working with industry and academia to identify, develop, prove and de-risk promising new technologies and bring them to market. It is helping to reduce the cost of offshore renewable energy, supporting the growth of the industry and creating UK benefit.

We are currently looking for an Electrical Design Engineer to provide engineering and inspiration to support, develop and deliver ORE Catapult’s goal of becoming and remaining a recognised centre of excellence in offshore renewable energy. 

As a key member of the Engineering Team, within Test & Validation, the role will ensure the development and delivery of the research projects, programmes and tests, ensuring they are underpinned by robust, expert and sustainable engineering processes, procedures and capability.  


What are my key responsibilities?

  • Manage and develop the electrical installation and design requirements within the facilities to ensure testing processes meet customer requirements and accreditation standards.

  • Responsible for ensuring the setup of customer test pieces and supporting equipment/systems within the facilities are to the required standards

  • Provide electrical specification, design, installation, testing, and commissioning skills as necessary to the commercial operations and research activities including, but not limited to, testing, design, development, tender preparation/evaluation, budget preparation/review, contractor management and customer interface.

  • Support the application of the test process to a given project plan to meet customer expectations.

  • Responsible for the creation of technical test reports to client’s satisfaction, in particular collation and presentation of electronic data in respect of electrical performance and operation.

  • Perform primary and secondary electrical design of a range of equipment such as substations, transformers, switchgear and protection.

  • Ensure all ORE Catapult projects, programmes and tests are developed and delivered in line with agreed project plans and ORE Catapult processes and procedures

  • Ensure design and project records relating to electrical test, activities and project work are maintained in accordance with ORE Catapult processes and procedures.

  • Maintain currency of knowledge of latest electrical systems and components, as well as other relevant technologies, standards, engineering good practice and the application of these in a research and commercial environment.

  • Improve processes and systems, or proactively create them where they are needed and do not exist to ensure all the ORE Catapult’s engineering activities (research and commercial) operate in line with, or above, industry good practice.
  • Fulfil role of representative for engineering activities within a project team to develop and deliver projects, programmes, testing and test facility development, and their associated deliverables
  • Support and promote Health & Safety, Environment & Quality as core business principles within an OHSAS 18001, ISO14001, ISO9001, ISO17025 environment.

  • Develop innovative commercial and research projects in line with ORE Catapult goals and objectives.

  • Develop and disseminate engineering knowledge to key stakeholders.

  • Represent ORE Catapult at industry forums, demonstrating capability, competency and experience to stakeholders.

  • Work with other business functions independently and as part of a project team to support the development of key Knowledge Areas.

  • Where appropriate, populate and maintain design and project records relating to engineering activities and project work in accordance with ORE Catapult processes and procedures.

  • Where appropriate, review team member deliverables or other work within areas of competency and in accordance with ORE Catapult processes and procedures.

  • Provide support to other team members and proactively assist in their development

  • Take part in HAZOP and HAZID reviews as appropriate

  • Any other duties that may reasonably be required from time to time to deliver ORE Catapult objectives.


What do I need to qualify for this role?

  • Educated to at least degree level in a relevant discipline.

  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent would be beneficial

  • Experience of HV distribution systems and associated equipment including converters and drives

  • Experience of cabling for HV/LV projects

  • Sound knowledge of electrical generating plant and apparatus

  • Knowledge of ePlan, CAD, AMTECH, and 17/18th Edition wiring regulations would be beneficial.

  • Motivated and strong team player – able to work alone or in collaborative team environments across multiple site locations.

  • Good time management and activity planning

  • Knowledge of, and the application of, good practice engineering design procedures and tools.

  • Good communication skills, both written and oral – must be capable of writing detailed technical reports and communicating test results to non-technical personnel

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Good understanding of H&S legislation applicable to offshore operations.

  • Experience of working in OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001, ISO 17025 environments.
