Engineering Internships- Summer 2019

Based in Glasgow

 

 

The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is one of a number of Catapults set up by Innovate UK to accelerate the deployment of innovative technology in the UK.

 

With primary locations in Glasgow and Blyth, Northumberland, ORE Catapult is working with industry and academia to identify, develop, prove and de-risk promising new technologies and bring them to market.  It is helping to reduce the cost of offshore renewable energy, supporting the growth of the industry and creating UK benefit.

 

We are looking to take on a number of summer internships for a 10 – 12 week period, over the months of June to September 2019.  These will be based within our Operational Performance Directorate, and during this period the successful candidates will support the programme and tests that contribute to technology commercialisation in the offshore renewable sector.  Working within the Engineering Team, the internships will be involved at all stages of project life cycles, from conception through to delivery and dissemination. 

 

 

Main duties of the role:

  • Support and promote Health & Safety, Environment & Quality as core business principles.
  • Contribute to and assist in the delivery of project, programme and test deliverables within agreed budget and timescales in accordance to ORE Catapult processes and procedures.

    • Contribute to technical engineering projects and tasks.

    • Undertake specialist engineering activities including however not limited to engineering design, analysis and research.

    • Reporting and dissemination of results.

  • Support the development of projects, programmes and tests.

  • Research and identify key technical challenge areas within the offshore renewables industry.

  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to define project scope.

  • Provide support to projects and teams within ORE Catapult. Examples include: 

    • Design Engineering using CAD systems (Solid Edge).

    • Finite Element Analysis and calculations based on first principles.

    • Analysis using CFD package and calculations based on first principles.

    • Analysis of large engineering dataset (i.e. structural health monitoring data).

    • Reviewing existing industry standards and best practice.

    • Prepare technical specifications and support with tender preparation / evaluation.

  • Support the development and growth of the team and focus area.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

 

What do I need to qualify for this role?

 

Studying towards a relevant engineering degree, with a knowledge of basic engineering principles in one or more of the following principles:  Mechanical, Hydrodynamics, Fluid Mechanics or Materials, we are looking for candidates who have an interest in the Renewable Energy Industry; Offshore Engineering, Engineering Design and Analysis or Industrial Manufacturing.
