The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is one of a number of Catapults set up by Innovate UK to accelerate the deployment of innovative technology in the UK.

With primary locations in Glasgow and Blyth, Northumberland, ORE Catapult is working with industry and academia to identify, develop, prove and de-risk promising new technologies and bring them to market. It is helping to reduce the cost of offshore renewable energy, supporting the growth of the industry and creating UK benefit.


What is the role?

We are currently looking for a Graduate Engineer to join our Operational Performance team. The role of the successful candidate shall be to develop, lead and support projects, programmes and tests which contribute to technology cost reduction in offshore renewables. The candidate will be involved at all stages of a project lifecycle from conception through to delivery and dissemination, ensuring all work is underpinned by sound engineering principles, sustainable processes and robust procedures. The focus of the projects and technologies shall be within however not limited to the area of Mechanical Engineering in the offshore renewables industry. The Engineer will also be strongly involved with supporting the development and growth of the team.

The position is based in Glasgow.


What are my key responsibilities?

  • Support and promote Health & Safety, Environment & Quality as core business principles within an OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001, ISO 17025 environment.


  • Lead and deliver project, programme and test deliverables within agreed budget and timescales in accordance to ORE Catapult processes and procedures.

    • Lead technical engineering projects and tasks

    • Undertake specialist engineering activities including however not limited to engineering design, analysis and research

    • Reporting and dissemination of results following project completion.


  • Support the development of projects, programmes and tests.

    • Research key technical challenge topics within the offshore renewables industry

    • Identifying key challenge areas in the offshore renewables industry

    • Working with internal and external stakeholders to define project scope

    • Support in identification and securing of funding sources for projects.


  • Provide specialist technical Engineering skills where required to support other project and teams within ORE Catapult. This may include however is not limited to:

    • Design Engineering using CAD systems

    • Finite Element Analysis and calculations based on first principles

    • Analysis using CFD package and calculations based on first principles

    • Analysis of large engineering dataset (i.e. structural health monitoring data)

    • Reviewing existing industry standards and best practice

    • Prepare technical specifications and support with tender preparation / evaluation

    • Act as technical interface with external stakeholders (i.e. customers, suppliers).


  • Support the development and growth of the team and focus area.


  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.


  • Represent ORE Catapult at external meetings and events where required.


What do I need to qualify for this role?

Educated to at least degree level in a relevant discipline, the successful candidate will have;

  • A relevant engineering degree

  • Thorough knowledge of basic engineering principles in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: Mechanical; Structural; Hydrodynamics; Materials;

  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Renewable Energy Industry; Offshore Engineering; Engineering Design and Analysis; Industrial Manufacturing

  • Sound pragmatic approach to problem solving with the ability to autonomously tackle and provide solutions for engineering challenges

  • Motivation and takes responsibility to continually develop own abilities and technical skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and be a team player, supporting others where required

  • Good time management skills with ability to plan and manage own utilisation.
