The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is one of a number of Catapults set up by Innovate UK to accelerate the deployment of innovative technology in the UK.

With primary locations in Glasgow and Blyth, Northumberland, ORE Catapult is working with industry and academia to identify, develop, prove and de-risk promising new technologies and bring them to market. It is helping to reduce the cost of offshore renewable energy, supporting the growth of the industry and creating UK benefit.

What is the role?

We are currently looking for a Head of Commercial who will be responsible for establishing the detailed Business Plan for the Test & Validation Directorate and to deliver against that plan ensuring targets for commercial income, collaborative research income, impact KPI’s and capital funding are all achieved.

What are my key responsibilities?

  • Business Planning and Revenue Targets

    • Prepare the detailed Business and Delivery Plans to achieve the strategic objectives of the Test & Validation Directorate

    • Responsible for the Delivery of the Business Plan

    • Responsible for establishing sufficient pipeline projects/contracts to achieve target commercial income, collaborative research income and impact KPI’s

    • Co-ordinate the sales activities for Test & Validation

       

  • Business Development

    • Develop new services and capabilities to meet market demand

    • Lead the development of the value proposition and strategic sales and marketing for Test & Validation

    • Prepare bids for commercial work and collaborative research

    • Prepare bids for additional capital funding

    • Ensure the quality of orders & contracts negotiated align to the business risk appetite

       

  • Business Modelling and Reporting

    • Hold the Delivery Team to account and challenge when targets are missed

    • Responsible for mitigating the impact of changes to delivery of contracted projects by substituting replacement work

    • Responsible for developing and implementing a business model that makes optimum use of core funding

    • Responsible for developing and implementing a business model that allows sometime conflicting priorities of commercial work, research projects and economic impact to be resolved

    • Responsible for identifying efficiency savings

    • Responsible for resource planning across the Test & Validation Directorate and resolving conflicting priorities with peer group

    • Prepare business performance reports including outputs and capital expenditure

 

  • Other

    • Win, manage and develop enduring customer relationships (both internal and external) through the development of effect and appropriate business relationships

    • Manage, lead and develop direct reporting staff

 

What do I need to qualify for this role?

To succeed in this role, you must have and be able to demonstrate the following;

  • A good understanding of the Offshore Renewable Energy Sector

  • Demonstrable experience in the management of a commercial function

  • Experience of influencing, negotiating and managing detailed commercial contracts and the business risks associated with commercialising technologies

  • Sound relationship management skills and confidence working with Project Directors, Senior Management (internal & external) and consultants

  • Sound planning and analysis skills with the ability to look forward and see / anticipate problems and thereafter plan and implement mitigating solutions to negate the effect of such problems

  • Innovative and creative thinking

  • Problem solving – dealing with conflicting requirements

  • Tenacity, persistence and determination to succeed in overcoming obstacles

  • A capacity for change and experience of leading others through change

  • An understanding of how grant aid and government funding processes operate and the implications of state aid provisions

  • A degree or equivalent in a technical or business administration discipline, preferably of Chartered status

  • Minimum 5 years in a Senior Commercial Role
