Innovation Manager – Operational Performance

Location: Glasgow

The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is the UK’s flagship technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy.  It is one of a network of Catapult centres set up by Innovate UK to accelerate the deployment of innovative technology in the UK

With primary locations in Glasgow and Blyth, Northumberland, ORE Catapult is working with industry and academia to identify, develop, prove and de-risk promising new technologies and bring them to market. It is helping to reduce the cost of offshore renewable energy, supporting the growth of the industry and creating UK benefit

What is the role?

We are currently looking for an Innovation Manager who will promote ORE Catapult.  ORE Catapult operates within a matrix team structure and whilst having no immediate subordinates, the successful candidate will manage across the business with nominated engineers and support staff (in-house & externally appointed) to develop concepts and projects.

With responsibility for supporting company engagement the role will assist UK SMEs to engage with the ORE Catapult, Innovation Hub, and funding bodies to secure public funding for the commercialisation off new products and services.

The candidate will have a strong understanding of the offshore wind sector, the role of SMEs throughout the supply chain, and have previous experience in securing or delivery of public sector funding

What are my key responsibilities?

  • To support the ORE Catapult Operational Performance Directorate in delivering their business plan objectives, technically, commercially and with vision.

  • Support the delivery of the UK’s Offshore Wind Innovation Hub

  • To identify and develop high quality projects and programmes through collaborations and funding applications that deliver a revenue stream and develop capability for the ORE Catapult.

  • To contribute to development of the business through improvements to innovation management processes.

  • Build and develop strong networks with Senior stakeholders both regionally and within the sector

  • To ensure compliance with the governance processes of the ORE Catapult.

  • To establish strong links with the ORE Catapult partners (industry and academic).

What do I need to qualify for this role?

To succeed in the role the Innovation Manager must be able to demonstrate the following:


  • A degree or equivalent in a science, engineering or business discipline

  • Ideally, a higher degree in business, management or related subject.

  • Strong ability in Maths, English and Sciences.

  • 2 – 5 years operational experience Knowledge and knowhow:

  • Understanding of the Offshore Energy Sector

  • Understanding of public and private sector funding models

Experience and capability:

  • Data gathering skills through consultation, questionnaires and workshops

  • Ability to collate, assess and analyse industry priorities and other data

  • Excellent report writing skills for internal and external publication

  • Confident presenting to wide range of audiences (conferences, working groups)

  • Experience of developing projects with multiple participants including work package definition and commercial terms

  • Good stakeholder management skills and confidence working with Directors, Senior Management (internal & external) and consultants.

  • Influencing, negotiating, and communication skills.

  • The ability to look forward and anticipate problems and solve them.
