Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult is excited to be recruiting for an Instrumentation Engineer to be based within our Test & Validation directorate.

Our Test & Validation site, based in Blyth offers the most comprehensive open access and independent test and research facilities anywhere in the world to enable the scale-up of offshore renewable energy technologies.

This position holds responsibility for instrumentation and calibration requirements of the test facility assets, in addition to client device testing. The successful candidate will be accountable for both the delivery of offshore renewable energy related commercial testing activities and technical support to our research projects. 

Our Test Facilities are equipped to provide Test & Validation activities for Turbine Blades; Powertrains; Subsea, Foundations & Structures; Resource Assessment; Electrical Infrastructure and Robotics & Autonomous Systems. Our capabilities also include Technology Demonstration and Resource Assessment Facilities.

By bringing together offshore wind owners, operators, supply chain, industry leaders, regulators and academia we provide invaluable support the UK Offshore Renewable Energy sector as a whole. 

Tell me more about the position?

As Instrumentation Engineer you will manage our instrumentation and calibration requirements ensuring testing processes meet customer requirements and remain compliant with accreditation standards. This position is responsible for ensuring the accurate setup of test pieces in addition to ensuring equipment / systems within the facilities meet the required standards.

Our Test & Validation activities produce high volumes of data; you’ll provide instrumentation, data logging and data analysis as necessary to the commercial operations and research activities of our projects. Your contribution to this area of work will include testing, design, development, tender preparation/evaluation, budget preparation/review and customer and supplier interface.

You should have experience of working with a variety of measurement solutions. We use LabVIEW, DIAdem, Perception and MATLAB software including HBM and National Instruments hardware, experience in some or all of these areas would be highly desirable. The post holder will have a good working knowledge of specifications, installation, testing, and fault finding of instrumentation used to measure current, voltage, strain, temperature, pressure, acceleration, and force.

As part of this role you will be organising and delivering diagnostic activities on electrical, mechanical, electronic, instrumentation, and data logging equipment, and identify the root cause of any issues that present whilst identifying workable solutions where necessary. 

The successful candidate will have experience of producing technical reports pertaining to the collation of test data and associated data analysis. This is very much a customer facing position, you will collaborate with colleagues across the Test & Validation facilities providing a value adding service to our customers.

What do I need to qualify for this role?

  • Educated to at least degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer or working toward Chartership with a recognised engineering body would be beneficial.
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral – must be capable of writing detailed technical reports and communicating test results to non-technical personnel.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience of LabVIEW, DIAdem, Perception and MATLAB software including HBM and National Instruments hardware would be desirable, with strong data analysis skills
  • Knowledge of specifications, installation, testing, and fault finding of instrumentation used to measure current, voltage, strain, temperature, pressure, acceleration, and force
  • Motivated and a strong team player, able to work in collaborative team environments across multiple site locations
  • Good understanding and experience of H&S legislation applicable to offshore operations, while working in OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001, ISO 17025 environments.
  • Knowledge of and the application of good practice engineering design procedures and tools
