Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Blyth

 

The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is one of a number of Catapults set up by Innovate UK to accelerate the deployment of innovative technology in the UK.

With primary locations in Glasgow and Blyth, and regional facilities in Hull, Levenmouth, Wales and Cornwall.  ORE Catapult is working with industry and academia to identify, develop, prove and de-risk promising new technologies and bring them to market. It is helping to reduce the cost of offshore renewable energy, supporting the growth of the industry and creating UK benefit.

We are currently looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Testing and Validation team. This position will support, develop and deliver ORE Catapult’s goal of becoming and remaining a recognised centre of excellence in offshore renewable energy. This is an opportunity to help drive and deliver innovation activities in the rapidly growing offshore renewable energy industry.

 

What is the role?

As a key member of the Testing and Validation team, you will ensure that delivery of projects, programmes and tests are underpinned by robust, expert and sustainable engineering processes, procedures and capability. This is employed by the team to ensure the team offers the flexible and high quality engineering support the ORE Catapult’s multi-functional project teams require. It also allows the members of the team an opportunity to build a varied range of project experience which is tailored to personal development aspirations and drives innovative project performance.

Each role within the team is developed to deliver a level of specialist knowledge in one or more areas. The blend of these roles across the team provides a broad, dynamic and high quality engineering resource for the ORE Catapult.

The specific role requirement currently being sought is an engineer with expertise in Mechanical Design.

 

What are my key responsibilities?

  • Design, Mechanical systems, sub-systems and components in collaboration with other engineering disciplines and the testing asset based staff
  • Produce high quality design documentation in line with established standards and ensure they are maintained
  • Work with testing facility staff and other engineering specialists to develop the test assets and testing regimes on offer
  • Work with other departments to produce high quality technical reports as appropriate to the role, and follow quality procedures for their release
  • Keep abreast of technical developments and industry expertise to identify potential improvements to testing techniques
  • Assist internal clients such as business development and research functions to provide tender support and promote the facilities
  • Support management and engineering staff where required with technical knowledge
  • Support and mentor junior technical staff as appropriate
  • Maintain project records in accordance with company procedures
  • Maintain and update existing Design system quality procedures, to ensure they remain current
  • Maintain a high level of health and safety awareness in accordance with company procedures and current legislation, and encourage safe behaviours in the provision of the role

 

What do I need to qualify for this role?

  • A degree or equivalent in an Engineering discipline
  • Experience in Design of Mechanical systems and components in an operational environment
  • Experience in the use of Mechanical CAD and Analysis software, such as Solid Edge ST10 and Ansys 19.Engineers with experience in alternative design packages such as Catia, SolidWorks, Inventor, and Abacus will be considered as conversion training will be provided
  • Membership of a Professional organisation, such as IMechE, with Chartered Engineer Status or aspirations to achieve, is desirable
  • High level of safety knowledge as appropriate to Mechanical Design
  • Project management capability
  • Good communication and time management skills
  • Able to work effectively within a team environment
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Customer facing capability and able to forge strong relationships
