Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is excited to be recruiting for a Principal Senior Research Engineer – Wind turbine architecture, this position will be based in our Research & Disruptive Innovation Directorate.

ORE Catapult supports the UK offshore wind energy sector with its world class engineering skills and state of the art test facilities. We aim to grow the UK Offshore Renewable Energy sector through the application of innovative technologies and highly competitive supply chain companies.

One of the most important areas of impact for our organisation is the support of small to medium enterprises (SMEs), supporting with technology development through to market readiness and ultimately commercialisation.  To succeed, a range of support mechanisms ranging from market intelligence, technology assessment and, crucially, the identification of funding / investment opportunities.

The Principal Senior Research Engineer – Wind turbine architecture will be a key member of the Drivetrain Knowledge Area within the Research & Disruptive Innovation directorate, and lead development of Wind turbine system architecture and data analytics for next generation of offshore wind turbine as well as develop digital twin for offshore renewable energy sector with internal/eternal experts by using engineering knowledge of system analysis. 

 

Tell me more about the position?

As Principal Senior Research Engineer,  Wind turbine architecture will bring the relevant expertise to improve system design for large offshore wind turbine and data analysis techniques to create digital twin of offshore wind farm. The role will lead the development and integration of innovative technology  in existing and future wind turbine concepts.

The successful candidate will be skilled in the use of the both of system load analysis tools (i.e. Bladed, FAST or any equivalents) and programming languages (Python and MATLAB), responsible the continuous improvement and development of system architecture and digital twin for Offshore Energy.

The preferred candidate will have experience of relationship management with external stakeholders, the position will be deeply involved in the development of a digital twin framework for offshore wind farms.

Offshore Wind Farms produce high volumes of data relating to a myriad of measurables. The position requires experience of optimising big data management, implementing improved analysis processes for the accurate system load analysis. You should therefore possess a strong understanding of SQL or MySQL or experience of a reasonably alternative database management system.

The successful candidate will be operating at the forefront of innovation and development for the Offshore Renewable Energy Sector. You will conduct an array of Research & Disruptive Innovation projects collaborating with consultancies, OEMs, academia and innovators providing insights and advisory for real world application.

This position will also be the design authority for data processing and analytics, involved in planning and managing R&DI projects related to condition monitoring systems. The quality of work produced within Research & Disruptive Innovation Directorate is integral to maintaining our reputation as a leading international technology solutions provider.

What do I need to qualify for this role?

To be considered for the position you will have:

  • PhD. (or equivalent) in a Mechanical engineering or Data science
  • 5/10 years of highly relevant experience of wind turbine system/component life assessment, system design and test methodology development
  • Expert knowledge and industry proven experience of using data processing tools (such as Diadem, SQL, MATLAB, Excel), simulation software (such as Ansys, Bladed) and programming languages (MATLAB, Python, Visual Basic, C++, Fortran) in any industrial domain (offshore renewable energy sector is preferred)
  • Good oral communication and professional report/technical papers writing skills in English.
  • Problem solving – dealing with conflicting requirements.

 

The following elements are desirable:

  • Good scientific research and industry experience of using Artificial Intelligence tools (including machine learning tools and artificial neural network) for data processing and diagnostics.
  • Good programming skill for development of both front-end (GUI) and back-end (application and databases) of software.
  • Experience in leading/managing/supervising technical research and development resources
  • Sound relationship management skills and confidence working with Project Directors, Senior Management (internal & external).
  • Innovative and creative thinking.
