Regional Innovation Manager


The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is one of a number of Catapults set up by Innovate UK to accelerate the deployment of innovative technology in the UK


With primary locations in Glasgow and Blyth, Northumberland, ORE Catapult is the UK’s leading technology innovation and research centre for offshore renewable energy.  We are delivering the UK’s largest clean growth opportunity by accelerating the creation and growth of UK companies in offshore renewable energy. Our unique facilities, research and engineering capabilities bring together industry and academia and drive innovation, focusing on three main areas: testing and validating offshore renewable energy technologies; research & innovation; improving the operational performance of the existing fleet of offshore renewable energy infrastructure.


What is the role?

We are currently looking for a Regional Innovation Manager based in Cornwall. Reporting to the Sector Lead Wave & Tidal Energy, this role will help maintain and grow ORE Catapult’s established support to SME innovation in the South West. The role will promote ORE Catapult’s regional activity through proactive engagement with local industry, academia and public bodies, to identify potential collaborative and bilateral projects and programmes while helping to strengthen existing networks both regionally and within the wave, tidal and offshore wind energy sectors.

You will provide a strong focus on innovation, sector technology challenges, national and international renewables policy.  Working with regional partners you will manage the ORE Catapult’s day to day obligations in delivering the Marine-i SME innovation project. You will proactively encourage SME innovation in the region, leveraging use of ORE Catapult’s expertise and test facilities at Levenmouth and Blyth. Working with the Sector Lead Wave & Tidal Energy, you will help deliver the ORE Catapult’s broader regional engagement strategy, including developing opportunities across the South Coast Marine Cluster and Wales, and supporting the strategy for a ORE Catapult technology centre in the South West.


What are my key responsibilities?

  • Support the Sector Lead Wave & Tidal Energy deliver the regional Business Plan objectives.

  • Build and develop strong networks with senior stakeholders both regionally and within the Offshore Renewable Energy sector.

  • Manage the Catapult’s day to day partner responsibilities in the Marine-i project.

  • Assist with the development of written deliverables such as internal research and business plans, external technology foresight roadmaps and conference presentations.

  • To identify and support development of commercialisation opportunities for ORE Catapult products and services.

  • To contribute to development of the business through improvements to innovation management processes.

  • Ensure project delivery is accordance with ORE Catapult and where applicable Marine-i governance, policies and procedures.

  • Manage reach back to ORE Catapult expertise to support project concept development, costing new proposals and to ensure successful project delivery.

  • Promote the capabilities and expertise of ORE Catapult in the region.

  • Maintain full awareness of ORE Catapult’s Occupational Health & Safety policy


What do I need to qualify for this role?

A degree or equivalent in an engineering, business or other appropriate discipline is required, preferably a higher degree in business, management or related subject. You must have a strong ability in Maths, English and Sciences in addition to a good understanding of the offshore energy sector and public and private sector funding models.

You must have experience of developing projects with multiple participants including work package definition and commercial terms, in addition to having the skills to collate, assess and analyse industry priorities and other data.  You will be confident in presenting to a wide range of audiences (conferences, working groups), have good stakeholder management skills and be confident working with company directors and senior management.

Good report writing skills, influencing, negotiating and communications skills are essential as is the ability to anticipate problems and solve them. You must have the tenacity, persistence and determination to succeed and be innovative and creative with your thinking.
