Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is excited to be recruiting for a R&D Engineer – Aeroelasticity, this position will be based in our Research & Disruptive Innovation Directorate.

The Research & Disruptive Innovation Directorate supports the development and commercialisation of future offshore renewable energy technologies through applied research, key collaboration with UK and international stakeholders from industry and academia and via direct innovation with SMEs (Small to Medium Enterprises).

As a key member of the Blades Research Team, you will focus on novel techniques and applications related to blade structure, with a focus on floating offshore wind solutions. This will be achieved through an array of R&D activities in collaboration with ORE Catapult colleagues, national and international research organisations, and leading businesses within the offshore renewables sector.


Tell me more about the position?

The UK Net Zero target date of 2050 and capacity goal of 40 GW of offshore wind by 2030 is driving massive growth in offshore power generation. Accelerated development of ever larger, more efficient blade structures is vital in unlocking cost declines required to drive growth. A key underpinning of this development however is sound understanding of the aeroelastic behaviour of these composite structures.

As an aeroelastic researcher you will be given the opportunity to support the development, formulation and delivery of research activities related to the development of offshore renewables with a particular focus on floating offshore wind technology. Within the Blades Research team, you will work closely with colleagues to shape the detail of projects, whilst pro-actively discovering future opportunities and making proposals related to emerging technologies within the industry. We collaborate with researchers, OEMs, academia and technology developers providing insights, advisory services and tangible solutions for real world applications. Therefore, the preferred candidate will have excellent communication skills and ideally have previous experience of working with both internal and external stakeholders.

The composition of your work will cover research, development, full scale demonstration and validation activities both through computer simulation and using ORE Catapult’s world leading test facilities.

This role will support the formulation and delivery of innovative solutions which will cover design, monitoring and testing. Partnering with our research and industry-based counterparts, you will be afforded the opportunity to create and publish high quality research publications representing ORE Catapult at technical and scientific forums and conferences.

What do I need to qualify for this role?

  • Good knowledge of turbine Blade structure and architecture
  • A degree (or equivalent) in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering or related discipline
  • A PhD/EngD qualification in an aeroelastic/structural discipline is desirable, but not essential.
  • Experience in aeroelasticity applied to wind turbines, with a focus on rotor/blade high fidelity aeroelastic modelling
  • Familiarity with wind turbine loads and dynamics simulation tools (Bladed, Fast)
  • Experience with ANSYS and APDL for finite element simulation
  • Experience in Coding (eg Matlab, C++, Python)
  • Experience in producing research and/or technical reports
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and within a highly dynamic environment
