Senior Research Engineer, Digital Technology

Location: Blyth

The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is one of a number of Catapults set up by Innovate UK to accelerate the deployment of innovative technology in the UK.

With primary locations in Glasgow and Blyth, and regionally facilities in Hull, Levenmouth, Wales and Cornwall.  ORE Catapult is working with industry and academia to identify, develop, prove and de-risk promising new technologies and bring them to market. It is helping to reduce the cost of offshore renewable energy, supporting the growth of the industry and creating UK benefit.

What is the role?

We are currently looking for a Senior Research Engineer, Digital Technology to join our Research & Disruptive team. This role will support the delivery of research and development activities related to digital technologies, support and initiate the development for novel technologies and solutions for the R&D and commercial activity in this area.

The successful candidate will provide up to date sector knowledge and technical compliance regarding digital technologies. They will provide sound technical support to the Lead Research Engineers and PM’s to successfully deliver projects safely, to schedule, quality and cost in accordance with partner needs and contract requirements; initiate concepts and proposals ensuring that technical scope, scheduling and resourcing issues are fully addressed.

What are my key responsibilities?

  • Ensuring project technical activities are delivered in quality, time and budget in compliance with ORE Catapult’s project management processes and regulatory standards, processes and procedures.
  • Maintain an expert up to date knowledge of research activities within the offshore renewables with focus on digital technologies.

  • Look to work closely with key R&D stakeholders shaping and delivering projects, managing external dependencies and interfaces.

  • Comply with ORE Catapult policies and procedures in terms of SHEQ, project management, risk and asset management. Maintain a high standard of health & safety awareness through encouraging safe behaviours with colleagues, contractors and other stakeholders.

  • Identifying opportunities for improvements on technologies and industry solutions.

  • Represent the company at the technical forums and conferences

  • Participate proactively in the activities of multi- discipline teams, the teams being a mix of core team members and specialists working through a flexible matrix structure.

What do I need to qualify for this role?

  • Degree in relevant discipline e.g. data science, instrumentation, remote inspection

  • Preferably PhD/EngD in relevant technology area

  • Experience in the design and implementation of at least one of the following topics; remote inspection solutions, instrumentation, unsurpervised data processing, predictive data analytics, big data architecture, machine learning solutions, IoT for large and complex machinery

  • Experience in deliver R&D projects in academic and/or RTO environment.

  • Good understanding of technologies for offshore renewables is a bonus

  • Industrial experience and professional accreditation would be a bonus

  • High capacity for change and experience of leading others through change.

  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and within a highly pressured environment.

  • Attention to detail and capability to deliver projects in corporate matrix structures.

  • Team player

  • Interest for technology innovation and willingness to mentor junior technical team

  • Available to travel in the UK on a regular basis and abroad on a project basis
