The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) is one of a number of Catapults set up by Innovate UK to accelerate the deployment of innovative technology in the UK.

With primary locations in Glasgow and Blyth, Northumberland, ORE Catapult is the UK’s leading technology innovation and research centre for offshore renewable energy.  We are delivering the UK’s largest clean growth opportunity by accelerating the creation and growth of UK companies in offshore renewable energy. Our unique facilities, research and engineering capabilities bring together industry and academia and drive innovation, focusing on three main areas: testing and validating offshore renewable energy technologies; research & innovation; improving the operational performance of the existing fleet of offshore renewable energy infrastructure.

What is the role?

We are pleased to share that we are recruiting for a Summer Intern which will be based in our Research & Disruptive Innovation directorate, within our SME (Small to Medium Enterprises) Team.

Small-medium enterprises (SMEs) are crucial to the UK in terms of innovating and developing and commercialising new technologies, processes and services. 99.9% of UK businesses fall into the category of SMEs and due to their smaller size, they are often more agile and capable of developing solutions to shorter timescales.

Intern Activities

The SME Team are seeking an intern for a period of 10 weeks during summer 2020 to support the team’s activities and develop them further so that as an organisation ORE Catapult can better respond to the needs of SMEs.

  • SME Portfolio and Investment Analysis (Power BI or similar)
  • Fill data-gaps in held company information for the SME portfolio
  • Draw meaningful conclusions from company information to highlight trends and statistics
  • Suggest activities which could fill gaps in portfolio or engage with underrepresented portions of the supply chain
  • Develop Impact Case Studies for Launch Academy Accelerator, OWGP (Offshore Wind Growth Partnership) and other SME programmes
  • Collate evidence and present impact of SME Team-run programmes to show track record
  • Support Research for ongoing R&D Proposals
  • Assist SME team in ongoing proposal development with research and bid writing
  • Technology Landscaping Study (Possible topics: Data and Digital, Materials, Sensors and Communications)
  • Select an area of interest and produce a landscaping study highlighting: a summary of the technology/sector, technology challenges, UK capability (business and academic), research and innovation gaps, offshore renewable energy potential and ways for ORE Catapult to target the technology/sector

ORE Catapult’s SME team focusses on working with such companies to help them access opportunities in the Offshore Renewable Energy sector.

Further information on SME Team Activity:

Working with companies on an individual basis to help them develop and commercialise their technologies.

We develop funding proposals and set up collaborative R&D projects to assist companies in facilitating the development of their technology.  We track and analyse the portfolio of companies which ORE Catapult engage with to feed into company-wide reporting and assess our impact / contribution.

What do I need to qualify for this role?

Our Internship Placement is designed for candidates with a basic knowledge of renewable energy principles who are actively studying an Undergraduate Degree in one of the following categories: Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Subjects, Business, Social Science.

Given the nature of our work you should have an interest in the Offshore Renewable Energy industry.

This position offers a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable practical experience which will support your development within the engineering space. The successful candidate will be a confident communicator, looking to use their knowledge and skills to make a positive contribution to the UK renewables sector.
